Raliwav maintenance men wil’ to-dav proceed alone the cliff face and cut down any dangerous trees and also drop down any stones on the side, that have been loosened as a result of the fire. A large heap of mined coal deposited near an outcrop on the cliff face caught fire as a result of the blaze, but there is no fire in the coal seam nor is there any ’ikelihood of the seam or coal deposits in the vicinity being set alight. The main coal seam is about 100 feet above the railway level. Railway surface men have been unable fo carry out repair work owing to the existing danger, whilst, even if the rail were fixed and permitted tram traffic to resume, the vibration of pa* sing trains would probab’y cause further st'ones to fall from the face. As soon as all loose stones and dangerous trees are removed to-day. repairs wi 1 be carried out to the line. Residents in the locality, in the interests of safety, were yesterday compelled to use the creek bed between DnnoHie and Rewanui.
