The wea fiber has been here as wintry as elsewhere over the week-end, with showers and cold. There was a frost thiy morning, but rain fell before noon. South Westland also reports very unpleasant eon diit ions. At the Court this morning, before Mr A. E. Benjamin, J.P., two country lesidents, arrested on Saturday night, being found drunk, were each fined ss. An endeavour is being made to revive the Hokitika Caledonian Society 4 and a meeting is being held in St. Andrew’y Hall on Wednesday. A motor accident occurred yesterday on the road between Okarito Forks and Waiho. O.ne car met two coming in the opposite direction. T)he one in front had to pull up smartly, as the road is narrow. The second ear, running very close behind, did not pull up promptly enough, with the result that it ran into the front car the rear of which was crumpled to some exte,nt, while ihe either car also suffered damage.

Endeavours are beinj made to find work, in this district for footballers of note. There has been some talk that W. Mann and J. Hooper, West Coast representatives), who have been playing in Greymouth, arc seeking work here, while It iy understood G. Nolan, of Christchurch, one of the full backs in Saturday’s South Island trial match, is also seokiftg employment in this dis triet.

A general meeting of the Hokitika District High School Ex-Pupils’ Association is being held on Thursday evening to consider Mr .1. 11. It}. Schroder’s motion for the alteration of the constitution to admit to the Association all past pupils.

In the L.G.U. an approaching and putting competition (for Miss Houston’s Trophy)/, the following players returned the same score: Miss Betty Yarrall, Mrs Moore and Misy P. Dowell. On a count over the last nine holes, Miss Yarral! and Miss D’owell again tied. The players will play off. Ono application, which came before the Westland Licensing Conynittee at its annual meeting, that of Joseph Owen Byrne for the renewal of an accommodation .license in respect of the Wataroa Hotel, was opposed by the police. The applicant said he had not had previous experience of conducting a hotel. The Committee granted the license.

At the fortnightly meeting of the County Mining Executive, there were present Messrs J. A. Murdoch (chairman), T. Chesterman, A. Dale, D. J. Evans and Supervisors T. Moore and •T. MeQuilkin. Hewer wrote correcting erroneus report on his work on the Moa.—lt was pointed out that Mr Hewer’s subsidy had not been stopped. E. Connelly, Harihari, sent an explanation concerning commencement of work on subsidy scheme, asking for reconsideration regarding subsidy deducted for one fortnight.—Request not entertained. W. Hazeldine applied for transfer to work with A. K. Jolley. E. F. Howard applied for transfer from Sunday Gully to Craig’s freehold.— Approved. Mr O’Brien, M.P., wrote on behalf of Mr Mulvaney, South Westland, asking that his subsidy be granted.—lt was resolved to write Mr O’Brien pointing out the true position. E. A. L. Wickes wrote giving explanation concerning work on subsidy scheme —A report was given by Supervisor T. Moore on the same matter. It was resolved in view of the Supervisor’s report, and the inconsistency of Wickes’ own report, that application be made to Wickes for a refund of the subsidy received during the period in dispute. authorising increase of 10s per week for the three Supervisors concerned T. Moye, T. Moore and J. McQuilkim The Board wrote re extra payments to James White, while employed in driving prospecting tunnel. It was suggested that payment of subsidy be by the foot. The Board forwarded copy of application for prospecting license of 50 acres in Blk. 1 Kanieri S.D., asking for approval of grant. The Conservator of Forests concerning pros pecting operations at Gentle Annie, enquired particulars of operations. H. R. Baxter notified that track from Christchurch road to Seven Mile along the Taipo River has been blocked through slips from mountainside, and asking the Committee’s attention to improvements of access in the Taipo area.—Resolved that reply be sent and that track bo repaired by unemployed. Ross Committee forwarded report of Supervisor Moye recommending that 52 sheets or Bft iron be purchased for roofing tents for reef prospecting. —Agreed to. At the meeting of the local Acclimatisation Society it w r as decided to make a request to the Tourist Depart inent for a donation of rainbow eyed ova for liberation in the s outhern lakes. It was reported that opossum licenses had been issued as follows: — C. E. Bergman, E. H. Jamieson, R. Harvey, C. Singer, H. Groweott, jnnr., I, Drummond, C. Wilson, W. F. Ross, W. H. Kemp, R, Mills, F. Curtain, R Ross. Permits to trap opossums on their own property were issued to J R. Shannon, P. IT. B. Olson, S. de Fillippi, A. Griffin, W. IT. Breeze, F W. Brown and J. E. Searle. It. was re ported game licenses had been issued as follows: —F. Hamilton (Ross), I Whitehead, H. Dale, A. M ?Gavock, S A. C. Darby, IT. J. Screen, H. Newman. C. B. Preston, W. R. Adamson, A. Mr J O’Brien, M.P., forwarded a letter from the Minister of Scenery Preservation, advising negotiations with the owners of the bush concerned were being undertaken with a view of securing the areas in question. It was decided to forward a letter of appreciation to Mr O’Brien. North Canterbury Society acknowledged the Society’s order for 350,000 brown trout eyed ova. The Marine Department wrote re the Society’s request for a donation of quinnat eyed ova and advising 100,000 would be forwarded providing supplies were available. The Conservators of Fish and Game, Rotorua, asknowledged the Society’s order for 100,000 rainbow trout ova. Southland Society advised the Society’s order for 350,000 brown trout eyed ova would be dispatched in due course. The Department of Internal Affairs advised the open season for opossum trapping would be extended from noon on June 1, to August 1, 1935. The Department advised £2OOO had been set aside for opposum ranging and fresh w r ater fish reaserch, and that, of this amount £5OO was being paid to the Acclimatisation Societies’ Association for fresh water fish research and the Society’s share of the balance was £6B 7s. In addition £2 10s 4d representing dues etc., had been credited to the Society The Inspector of Fisheries advised it would only bo possible to supply 100, 000 quinnat eyed ova owing to the failure of the greater portion of this season’s salmon run to get past the new Waitaki dam to their usual spawning stream above. The Department of Internal Affairs acknowledged receipt of the Society’s balance sheet for the year ended March 31. The Rev. G. A. and Mrs Naylor were tendered a farewell social at St. Andrew’s Hall on Friday night. | The hall was full and the gathering i was representative. Rev. L. S. Dewar of Ross, was the chairman. Appre ciative reference to Mr Naylor’s work for the Presbyterian Church was made by Mr. J. L. Menzies, particularly in the interest of the young people. Ho asked Mr Naylor to accept a wellfilled wallet from his congregation as a token of their esteem. The Mayor (Mr Perry), Captain Allcott (Salvation Army), Pastor A. Grundy (Church of Christ), Rev. H. J. W. Knights (Anglican), Rev. W. E. Allan Can (Methodist) and Rev. 11. R. Fell (Greymouth) all expressed regret at Mr. and Mrs Naylor’s departure and extended

best wishes. Mr Naylor thanked all for their token of goodwill presented Io him that night. A programme ot music was contributed as follows: — Piano solo, Miss E. Robinson; vocal solos, Mrs 11. R. Fell (Greymouth), Misses A. Duff and Taylor; musical monologue, Mr J. L. Menzies; duet, Mesdaines Bassett and Harrison. The accompanists were Miss Robinson and Mrs. Jordan. Community singing was conducted by Mr J. L. Menzies.
