HOKITIKA NOTES

(Our Own Correspondent.) HOKITIKA, May 28. The Kokatahi-Koiterangi Win'er Show was successfully opened this afternoon, the displays proving fully up to the previous ones. There was a good attendance this afternoon, and the show will be open this evening and again to-morrow morning and afternoon. The Gael sailed at daylight this morning for Wellington. The Foxton is due back to-morrow morning to load timber for Wellington. Evidently the Greymouth Radio Station 3ZR, despite it s popularity throughout, the West '('oast, might be given better support than it receives at present. The Director, Mr M. Spiers, who was present last evening at the meeting of the Westland Rugby Sub-Union, expressed appreciation of the support given the station by listeners in Westland. Tie outlined the difficulties under which the station was working. An annual grant was received from the Government, hut this was insufficient to meet the expenses incurred. Very little financial support was received from the Greymouth public. Tn view of this, the support from Westland was much appreciated. He ’would do what he could do to broadcast the Marlborough match, the cost of which would be about £2O. The station received a grant from the Government. They called it a subsidy, but it was a grant as it subsidised practically nothing, except what he paid out of his awn pocket, and that was quite a considerable sum. Broadcasting stations were now no longer to make .in appeal for funds over the air. and the financial support he was receiving from the Greymouth public was almost negligible. If th n re 'was no improvement in the position, he might have to request the Broadcasting Board to close down 3ZR. The SubUnion, which were not asked to do so, voluntarily donated Cl Is. while a collect ion among members resulted in £1 Ils C»d being received also. Certainly 3ZRi is much appreciated in Westland.
