Britain and New Zealand show a remarkable contrast in the distribu lion of their telephones, demonstrating that this means of communication is rated very high in the Domitiox. as a social convenience. Of the telephones in Great Britain and Northern Ireland, according to recent figures published by the British PostmasterGeneral, about 30 per cent, of the lelephone* are residential, the remain ing 70 per cent, being used for business purposes. Tn New Zealand, the proportions are almost exactly the reverse, telephones being so generally popular for private residences that 70 per cent, are to be found there, while about 3G per cent, represent the business installations.
