INQUIRY WANTED

ELECTIONS IN WELLINGTON. LABOUR PARTY ACTION. (Per Press Association). WELLINGTON, Alay 25. r l he Wellington Labour Representation Committee, after having obtained legal advice, has decided to ask for a Magisterial inquiry into the conduct of the election for the Mayor and City Council on the grounds that the election was not held in conformity with certain provisions of the legislation, an . ( !. in P a [ tic *u!ar that the Returning Officer failed to provide at several booths a sufficient number of ballot papers, with the result that a large number of electors were unable to record their votes. It is also alleged that many votes cast on behalf of companies and other corporate bodies were invalid though allowed by the Returning Officer. FAILURE TO DECLARE RESULT. AUCKLAND, May 25. A farcical position has arisen because of the long delay in declaring the result of the Transport Board election. The law requires the annual meeting to be held in May to elect the Chairman, appoint a deputy-chairman and consider the annual accounts and estimates. As the poll is undeclared, and three days’ notice can not be given to new members, a meeting is to be held on Wednesday of the old board, several of whom were certainly defeated at the election. In addition the chairman’s seat is in doubt. The chairman, Mr. J. A. C. Alhim, said to day that the board would meet and adjourn, and he felt confident that no business would be attempted. While the new members of the board wait to take their seats, the retiring members are still entitled to draw £1 10/- per meeting.
