HOKITIKA NOTES

(Our Own Correspondent.) HOKITIKA, May 24. There is stated 'to have been evident disapproval at the local aerodrome just before mid-day to-day among a ( number of residents who had bean assembled for the arrival uf the Government’s D.H. Gipsy Moth plane which is being lent for training aviators on the West Coast. It ’turned out that instead of alighting here first, the plane did yo at Onioto, near Greymouth at 11 a.m. This uspet arrangements that were locally made for an official welcome. The Chairman of the local Aero Club (Mr H. T. Parry) was informed at 10 o’clock that the plane i would reach Hokitika aerodrome at 11 a.m., and he collected a goodly number of representative citizens at the landing area. They, after waiting for three-quarters of an hour and being informed, after inquiry of indefinite left the aerodrome with much apparent disapproval. This plane is one of eight recently purchased by rhe Government, for training purposes, and allotted to various clubs. Piloted by the new Pilot-Instructor to the •Club. Flighti-Lieutenant Parkej, who had with him, Mr A. J. McDowall, of Greymouth, President of the Club, the plane flew over Greymouth. The County Council has had erected across Stribling’s Creek, Lake Kanieri highways a bridge for light traffic, pending a permanent structure. The ford will remain available for heavy traffic. There is a big list of entries f - the Kokatahi-Koiterangi Winter Show ~o be held next Tuesday and AVednesday at Kokatahi Hall. Keen competition is b (Heated in many classes. The cookery section will be a special attraction while farm products and produce will be both well worth seeing. Kokatahi (run Club will hold a clay-bird match at Kokatahi on AVednesday, the nomination fee being 7s 6d. There wvl also be a novice event. Rosy Womens’ Institute, at its monthly meeting held a competition for the most artistically arranged vase of flowers and won by Miss Teague, M. : ss M. McMullan being second. The competition foi a thrift article resulted: Miss Houlahan and Mias M. McMillian equal Ist, Mrs Jus. Manern 3rd. Miss N. Jones was presented with a handsome crystal vase in recognition

cf her services as secretary and treasurer during the past two years. A demonst ration of -Witting by Mrs Thiele was much appreciated. Mrs Peebles (President) was congratulated by members on being the recipient of the King’s Jubilee Medal. Birthday bouquets were presented to Mesdames S. Michell, J. Minehail, Ableson,Misses Deacon and Teague. The hostesses wiire Mesdames O’Neill, Peebles, Sykes and Miss Jean Thomson. The senior football matches to-mor-row will be Excelsior v. Kiwi, at Hokitika.; and Pirates v. Ross, at Ross. Ross juniors play Kokatahi at Kokatahi; and Kiwi juniors play ArAhura, at Arahura. The Kiwi-lExcelsioY J game should be very interesting. The Kiwi team will be:—Nicholson, [Roberts), Morgan, AVest, Martini,, Diedrich I (2), Anderson, Toohey, Stopforth, AVebb, Cooper. Leslie, AValker, Kelly, Henderson Hewlett and Turley. The Pirate team is as follows:—Agnew, Shiras, Hinton, Thorpe, Broadbenty Wafer, Dale, lugl'is (2) ( , Pfahlert (2), Woolhouse, Harrison Brown, Smith. Lareembe, Karnbach.
