GOLD MINING

New River Gold Dredging Co. Ltd., directors state the contract for the construction of the dredge for this company let to Messrs Andersons, Ltd., the well known Christchurch Engineering firm, provides for a dredge that is Diesel driven, and the specification calls for the best English materials, including Hadfield’s manganese buckets. The design of the dredge embodies the latest improvements on gold dredging. The contract price is £14,126. The contractors intend making an immediate start with, the work. The company was registered in November, 1934, its property consisting of 316 acres near Dunganville. In prospecting operations, 24 bores were sunk which averaged 6|d per yard. Two shafts returned values at 9d and 1/- per yard. Fourteen check bores were sunk which averaged lOld per yard. All values are calculated with gold at £4 per ounce.

The Mahakipawa report for the period ended May Bth is as follows:— The leading face has been advanced 10ft. on a slightly rising bottom. The gutter has a decided tendency to bear to the left, the right-hand wall having come over 4ft iu the last 6ft. The top half of the left or eastern wall has npt been visible for the last 9ft, but the lower half has projected out in the form of a shelf. The bottom is now about 2ft above the floor of the drive which is being turned to follow the gutter. The wash, which is cemented in places, does not contain any values. The face is now 1375 ft south and 155 ft west of the main shaft. Crosscut South.—At a point 23ft away from the drive and approximately 12ft into the wall, we started to rise vertically and at a distance of 14ft cut the wash. After rising another 6ft the back was caught up and a drive started on the south side of the rise. This has now been driven for 10ft. the first sft of which was more or less level, but in the last sft the bottom has started to fall and is about 6in lower than it was at the start. The wash Is sandy and contains no values. The co-ordinates of this face are now 1460 ft south and 130 ft west of tne main shaft. At the Assessment Court at Reefton objections to mining valuations were dealt with as follows: — Mossy Creek Gold Dredging Co. Ltd., to unimproved or rateable value of its dredging property £4,750 —Reduction of £5O allowed. John McLeod to unimproved or rateable value of eight prospecting areas, £Boo.—Reduced to £l6O.
