RUGBY FOOTBALL

COMPETITION GAMES Blaketown and United Win The West Coast Rugby Union’s competition matches were resumed on Saturday in fine sunny weather, and there was a good attendance at Rugby Park where the two senior matches were played. Blaketown maintained, their unbeaten record so far this season, when they proved too good a combination for Cobden, winning by 17 points to nil. On the run of play, however, this margin should have not been so great, as Cobden, although as a team it lacked the same combination as the opposing side, were unlucky not to score on several occasions. Star seniors fielded a much improved fifteen and fully extended United, which side finally ran out winners by 17 points to 11. Both teams treated spectators to some fast, open scoring movements. BLAKETOWN v. COBDEN. Blaketown ami Cobden seniors met on the No. 1 ground at Rugby Park Cobden won the tos sand had the sun in their favour. ’The heavy Blaketown pack set up an early assault on Cobden’s line, Bunt, Elder and Garth being associated in a passing movement which broke down in front of Cobden’s goal, where Pascoe was caught off-sido and play veered back to half-way. MeNeight then led the black forwards into Cobden territory but a knock-on halted a promising movement. B. Eggleton, Cobden’s first five-eighth retired at this stage with a sprained ankle. Spencer was hooking the ball for Cobden but the nippy Blaketown backs gave them no chances. Garth, who played an outstanding game as full back for Blaketown set his backs in motion at Cobden’s 25, all of them handling, to send Bunt over wide out for a pretty try. Preston and Reg. Olsen both drew the opposition nicely. Pascoe failed with a good attempt, at goal.—Blaketown 3; Cobden (i. Ic looked as if Blaketown would score again immediately afterguards but D. Olson dropped his pass. Oobden forwards then crossed Blaketown’s line, headed by Spencer, but were recalled, Gordon having knocked on. Garth and Elder were associated in a passing movement, the latter kicking over the line, but. A. Lindbom beat them to it to force down. Blaketown forwards worked hard, taking play to the Cobden 25. Garth sent out to Bunt from a scrum and he despatched D. Olsen, who scored wide- out, Pascoe failing to goal.—Blaketown 6; Cobden 0. Halftime was called soon afterwards.

Early in the second spell AlcNeight sent out a long pass ami the back* handled well and took play to Cobden’s 25, the movement breaking down when Scott, mishandled. Blaketown hacks were again despatched, but D. Olsen failed to hand out in time and lost possession. Gordon was penalised in a handy position, but Garth failed to goal. A. Scandrett picked up inside Cobden’s 25 and forged his way through to score -wide out. Pascoe’s attempt to goal just failed.—Blaketown 9; Cobden 0. A. Scandrett handed out to his backs but D. Olsen knoeked-on on the line. Cobden forwards led by Birchfield and Keith crossed, but n force-down resulted. Blaketown forwards broke through and Garth nipped in from a scrum near the line to score. Pascoe goaled. Pascoe and AlcNeight both made runs but were held up near the line. A. Scandrett picked up and forced his way over for his second try. Pascoe failed to convert. Air W. AleLaugh lan was an impartial referee. McNeight, Pascoe and the Scandrett Brothers stood out in the Blaketown pack, whilst Birchfield, Keith and Spencer were Cobden’s outstanding forwards. Garth, Bunt, Preston and Elder were the pick of a nippy line of Blaketown backs. A. Lindbom came through a lot of work for Cobden as full-back, with honours. Gordon gave his backs every opportunity, and Hopkins defended soundly.

UNITED v. STARS. United and Stars provided a more spectacular and open game on the No. 2 ground at Rugby Park. Devonport went over wide out for a good try iu the first few minutes of play, for Stars. Weir soon made up the leeway with a fine try after a passing bout amongst the United backs and Gilbert put United in the lead with a penalty goal soon afterwards. Devonport made a fine run down the side line from halfway to score after evading several high tackles, making the tally even again. R. Robinson then scored for United from a forward movement, G. Gilbert converting. Just before half time Afathieson scored a good try for Star from a rucking movement, Furness converting with a good kick. The half-time score was, Star 11; United 11. After some even play in the second half, Atasoji scored for United and added a further try when the Star backs allowed the United pack to break through. W. Mann, Canterbury rep. winger, having his first game lor Stars, created a good impression. Kear, Rose, Robinson and Alason were outstanding in the United pack, whilst Furness, Stevens and Buchanan were the leaders of the Star forwards. Gili bert, Hooper, Costello and Weir comI bined effectively in the United backs, I whilst Devonport, Beban, Mann and ! Scandrett did best of the Star backs. ! Air 11. Longstaff was referee. JUNIOR GRADE. COBDEN 17 v. CELTIC 3. Cobden juniors showed fine combination to defeat Celtic by 17 points to three. Cobden compiled 14 poins to Celtic’s three in the first half, and although Celtic made several thrusts, they could not penetrate the defence. Trygetters for Cobden were Todd, Barlow (2) and Gutberlet (2), ■whilst 11. Lindbom converted one. Mr N. Eggleton was referee. UNITED 24 v. STAR 0. United juniors had a comfortable win over Stars by 24 points to nil. Air D. Jarvis was referee. Blaketown thirds defeated Technical by 11 points to six. Air Goodall was referee. Blaketown fourths defaulted to Technical. WESTLAND MATCHES. Excelsior seniors continued their winning way at Ross on Saturday, defeating Ross by 11 to 6, but the game was more even than any in which the winners have previously figured this season. King scored a couple of tries and W, Hughes a third, M. Davidson *

converting one. .Tones scored twice for Ross. At Hokitika, a very even and interesting game saw Pirates beat Kiwis 8 to 6, but the losers played the better football, West their half, opening up passing runs, especially in the tinal stages, one of which saw I). Diedrich score well in the corner. Pirates held their own in the pack, and led 5 to 3 at half time, Boyd scored for Pirates, Agnew converting, but missing an easy penalty shot, while a try for Kiwis was not converted. Agnew in the second spell made a good run and (!. Pfahlert finalised it well with a try in the corner, making Pirates 8, Kiwis 3, after which Kiwis did most, of the attacking, being several times close to scoring. For the winners Thorpe, Yorke and Wafer played good forward games, the best of the backs being Boyd, Agnew, C. Pfahlert and Shivas. For Kiwis West stood out, which Diedrich (2), Griflin and Stopforth were also prominent. Ross juniors in a good game defeated Kiwis by 13 to 8. Kokatahi forfeited to Arahura.
