Mr G. K. Brown arrived on Saturday trom Christchurch.

The Prime Minister of Canada, Mr Bennett, left London for Canada, yesterday.

Mrs J. W. Dickson left on Saturday tor Wellington. to attend the annual Technical School conference.

A New York cable records the death °f Mr Herbert Witherspoon, General Manager of the Metropolitan Opera Coy. He was the first American-born manager.

Mr and Mis W. F. Harley and Miss J. G. Hambleton leave to-day by private car for Picton, ne route to Wellington, 'where Miss Hambleton will join Mr and Mrs A. Porteous, and

Miss J. Porteous, on an extended trip to England.

Mr H. H. Priestly, railway electrician, prior to his departure from Stillwater. was fa re welled by his fellow employees and presented with a wristlet watch, suitably inscribed. The presentation was made by Mr P. Knight, Stationmaster.

The friends of Mrs A. E. Mclntosh of Shakespeare Street, and Mrs M. Molloy, of Buccleugh Street, will be sorry to learn of the death of their sister, Mrs Jessie Addiss, of Auckland who was involved in a fatal accident there on Friday. The deceased also leaves a brother, Mr C. Foxcroft, of Blaketown, and another brother, Mr Henry Foxeroft, of Hastings. She had resided here many years ago, her late husband having been in a tinsmith business in Grevmouth.

The death occurred at the Grey Hospital yesterday morning of Mr Frank A. Cameron, at the age of 52 years, after an illness lasting for the past three years. A native of Dunedin, he worked for 11 years as State Mino storeman residing at Runanga, being later employed as clerk at Blackball mine, and as a traveller for D. Me Lean and Co. He leaves a wife, and a daughter, Mrs G. Beynon, of Twelve Mile, and three sons, Hurtyl, Frank and Henry, of Blaketown, also a sister and four brothers at Dunedin. The funeral takes place to-morrow after noon.

Passengers by Saturday’s express to Christchurch included Mr and Mrs C. Smith (on return to Invercargill), Mr and Mrs A. L. Edwards (to Wellington), Mr and Mrs T. A. Judkins, Mr and Mrs A. Mr J. Armstrong, President of the West Coast Mine Managers’ Association, who has retired from the position of manager of the James mine, after 40 years of mining on the West Coast, was the recipient of a presentation at a recent meeting of the Association. Mr G. Smith, manager of the Wallsend mine presented Mr Armstrong with a case of pipes, a lighter and a comb, and referred to his long association with the organisation, and wished him every success and good health in his years of retirement. Messrs B. Buchanan, W. Brown, S. Hewison and J. Neilson also spoke, paying tribute to Mr Armstrong’s work for the Association. Mr Armstrong suitably replied. Mr and Mrs Armstrong will leave shortly on an extended holiday visit to Australia.
