NEW BUILDINGS

FOR THE GOVERNMENT. AT NORTH ISLAND CENTRES. (Per Press Association). WELLINGTON, May .9. It is announced by Hon. J. Bitchoner tliat the Government intends to proceed immediately with the erection of new buildings at Wellington and Auckland to house Government Departments. Tho new Auckland building is to occupy the site of the old Post Office, between Shortland and Fort Streets.

In Wellington, the new building will be one of eight stories, on the area fronting Stout and Maginnity S’reets. The scheme includes the demolition of subsidiary buildings adjacent to the present- Government Buildings, and the creating of an open space of grass, shrubs, etc.

The necessity for extra Government accommodation in Wellington has been apparent for years, but 'the building programme was held up by the d( pression. said Mr Bitchencr. lhe Government felt that, (with a trend for the better, in the country’s finances, the time was opportune to undertake this work.
