MILLERTON NOTES

(Our Own Correspondent.) The local mine worked two days this week. Mine workers are beginning to wonder what are the final results of the national ballot. It seems as if the majority want the 10 per cent, cut restored. One hears that there is a likelihood of the coal owners meeting the Miners’ National Executive in another conference. If there is any truth in this report, it looks as if the miners voted for a down-tool policy, and that the mine owners knew the final count before the rank and file members! The Millerton Caledonian Society held their weekly whist drive in the Rechabite Hall on April 28th. there being a large attendance. The winner of the ladies’ prize was Mrs Evans, and of the men’s prize Mr Mor gan, both visitors from Stockton. Mr R. .Tack announced that an aggregate contest had commenced, and would conclude in ten ■weeks’ time. The Millerton Rangers’ Rugby seniors journeyed to Granity to play the Rovers in their first fixture for tlu season. The- weather was fine and a good game was witnessed.

Boswell scot cd a try and Reed kicked two penaltj goals for ihv winners; while ( hippeii- > dale kicked two penalty goals fo : | Stockton. Ranger hockey girls had a praetid game with a Stockton ladies’ team o: L the local Domain last Sunday. Th< . players were given coaching by AT 1 Finlay, of Denniston, which should b ■ helpful throughout the season. The Ranger Rugby seniors and jun- , iors will visit Westport on Saturday > to play Old Boys’ seniors and jun ? iors. These games should be ver keenly contested and an interesting exhibition of the code should be wit j nessed. Rangers are expected to b » well represented and there is no doub - they will keep the town boys busy. The Buller municipal elections ar drawing near,, and according to th • number of candidates in the field, i ' looks as if the people in this distrie I are looking for a change, both in th (‘ounty Council and the Hospita - Board. One must agree with th ? Westport reporter of the •‘Argus’ '■ that there is certainly good materia l to select from, and that therefore it i > up to the voters in the district io vot>

for the workers’ candidates. As the Wo’port reporter states, the voting be greatly reduced, on account of those behind with their sanitation fees being disfranchised. It seems as .■ there is controversy as to who is eligible to vote and who is not. In conversation. Mr Connew, President of the Ngakawau Miners’ Union, stated ha 1 been informed Lv Mr Turley that if any person’s 1 ome were on the electoral roll, the person could vote. According to reports about here, the people seem to be of the opinion that there is no use I in paying any rates of any kind if i they n r g t’ng to be defranchised from ring a ote j Ist because they are in fees. The rightly ed on to the they are art of r< to be tak- | on away from them.
