GREYMOUTH J.C OPENS 1 Cup to Semper Paratus ROYAL SCEPTRE AND MARGARET ROSE WIN. [ The Greymouth Joekey Club’s mid- | summer meeting opened at Omoto I racecourse yesterday in warm showery weather. There was only a moderate attendance. The track was in fast order, but a little slippery, owing to showers. The fields were in most cases good-sized and were productive of some close and exciting finishes. The meeting was conducted in a highly satisfactory manner by officials of the Club, led by Mr T. E. Coates (President) and Mr M. J. Fogarty (Secretary). Some good dispatches were effected by the starter, Mr R. Hatch. The totalisator handled £3948 as against £6769 on the corresponding day last year, a decrease of £2821. Although Hokitika form failed to work out as anticipated, the dividends were in no case large, although some good prices were returned. The principal event, the Greymouth Cup, was won in convincing style by Semper Paratus from Coomassie, with the favourite, Monipere, who failed to stay over the last furlong, beaten into third place. Rothen, Royal Sceptre and Margaret Rose recorded successes I for Omoto trainers, whilst Azevedo, a Canterbury candidate, won the Novice Stakes, and Wino the Miners’ Hack. Rothen and Margaret Rose paid the two best dividends of the day. L. L. Harding, apprenticed to E. Kingan, of Omoto, was the most successful horseman with three wins. The first trot was won by the fourth favourite, Stella Derby, from the second favourite, Golden Square, whilst Awa Dillon won the second trot, with Myra Chenault runner-up. Pompeii was first to show out from Sundaneer and Azevedo in a straggling start, Azevedo took charge after a furlong from Sundancer, Pomepii and Nautipol and Arrowwin. Sundancer headed Azevedo two furlongs from home, whilst Pompeii, Sisterina and Nautipol were also prominent. Azevedo led into the straight from Sundancer, Pompeii, Sisterina and Nautipol. In a good finish Azevedo won by a length from Sundancer, with the fast finishing Sisterina a bare length away third. Nautipol was fourth close up, then came Fast Ace and Pompeii. Tote £3474. Tommy Boy broke up at the start of the Borough Trot, whilst Happi, Silver Letitia and La Rinkie were slow away. Golden Square piloted Stella Derby, Radiant Doll, Shore Leave past the stand, the remainder being well back, headed by Happi. At the back Golden Square led Shore Leave, Stella Derby and Radiant Doll. Entering the straight Setlla Derby drew up To tlie leading pair Golden Square and Shore Leave. Fifty yards from the post Stella Derby drew out and won easing up by thre lengths from Golden Square With Shore Leave a neck away third., Happi finished fast into fourth place. Marmoration made the pace to the straight from Imperial Spear, Rot.hen, Zetes, Patrole and Arctic. Star. Rothen, drawing away inside the distance won easily by three lengths from Marmoration, with Imperial Spear a length away third. Zete s was fourth, and Patrole next. The race was marred to some extent through Rose Vai slipping and falling, interfering with Arctic Star and Patrole. Fortunately H. Brown, rider of Bose Vai, was uninjured. Tote £495.

Winner trained by owner at Blenheim. . The Greymouth Cup produced a great finish, Semper Paratus winning by the narrowest ot' margins from Coomassi’e. Coomassie away .from Semper Paratus. Weatherly was soon in charge from Coomassie, Monipere and Semper Paratus. Passing the stand Weatherly led Little Doubt. Monipere, Coomassie, Semper Paratus, Lady Rene, R.iri 4 and Earthquake. Monipere took the lead half a mile from home, and was just in front of Weatherly and Coomassie, with Earthquake putting in a fast hurst. Little Doubt dropped out of the contest at the back, whilst Weatherly dropped back at the far turn. Two furlongs from home Monipere was in charge from Semper Paratus, Earthquake and Coomassie, Monipere having a good lead of four length. Semper Paratus finished brilliantly from inside the distance and Monipere was done with twenty yards from the post. Coomassie also finished well, but failed to overhaul Semper Paratus by a bare head. Monipere was two lengths back third, and then came Earthquake, Lady Rene, Riri and Weatherly, with Little Doubt last. Tote £6441.

Margaret Rose had a lead of three length into the straight, ami won by half a length from Animated w'ith Ladv Rene half a length away third. Haulbowline was fourth. Tote £515.
