BOXING
HASTINGS, January 1. In a professional boxing contest for the featherweight championship, Clarrie JJayner (Blenheim )_ 8.94, retained the title against £en Knuckey (Hastings), 8.84, the latter being knocked out four seconds before the end of the eighth round, and being unable to come back ninth. The bout was not a spectacular one, the holder letting Knuckey make, tin fight while waiting an opportunity to land a knock-out. The house was a poor one. LISTER BEATS CONDON. Harry Lister, of Greymouth, and Johnny Condon the Victorian middleweight champion, turned on a real heman battle at Pat McHugh’s Fitzroy Factory, Melbourne, a few days ago. Lister, after a gruelling battle, received the decision. Condon boxed splendidly over the finishing stages when Lister was tired, but the West Coaster by his tornadic attack up to the last quarter of the contest, piled up more points than Condon could obliterate. Twice during the bout the top rope snapped, Lister being the first to fall right out of the ring. Later Harry knocked Condon on to the. ropes and again they broke.
