GAMING RAIDS Series at Auckland NUMEROUS CHARGES. (Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, January 1. As a sequel to raids by detectives on premises in the city on Monday and to-day, four men appeared in the Police Court on charges of keeping common gaming houses. A plea of guilty was entered by Alfred Matthews, 52, dealer. Accused was fined £3O and costs. A Hindu denied a charge of being found in a common gaming house without lawful excuse, and the information was dismissed. A charge of keeping a common gaming house was preferred against Douglas Hipkins, 40. tobacconist. He was remanded for a week, bail of £lOO being allowed. Four men found on the premises were each fined two pounds. Four men were arrested to-day following raids by detectives, and appeared later in the police court. Stanley Thomson was charged with keeping a common gaming house. A similar charge was preferred against George Geelong Paul. Both were remanded, bail of £lOO being allowed in each case. Two men charged with being found without lawful excuse in a common gaming house were also remanded.
