(Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON October 19. Prisoners were sentenced to-day by Judge Reed as follows:— For negligently driving a motor-car thereby causing injury, Robert William Gunn, three months ’ imprisonment and ordered to pay costs of prosecution, £2 ISs, in default an additional month. Justice Reed said that he -dealt with the case from the point of view of endeavour to protect the public from negligent driving. It was not so much the question of punishing the prisoner as it was that *onie punishment should be inflicted which would be a possible deterrent to others. He did not think the prisoner would have been so inhuman as to have gone on had he known a man ’wias under the car
This was the case in which Ernest Alfred Harnor was knocked from a bicycle at Kilbirnie and dragged some distance under the car.
John Lili'am Brown, forgery, two years’ probation, and ordered to pay costs of prosecution, .£1 ss. Topcora Maewa Ames, 32, married woman demanding money with menaces from the licensee of the Paekakiariki hotel, two years’ probation and Io pay costs. Justice Reed pointed out the serious view taken by the Legislature of crimes of this nature, and he impressed -on the -\that leniency had been extended to her!t. she had been previously' convicted of an offence involving dishonesty, she would have been liable to 14 years’ imprisonment. Spencer Crawford Faulkner, indecent assault on a male, two years at Borstal. LONDON, October 18. After a thirty-six days-’ trial in the Chancery Division, of the actions of John Goodenay and David Kernan v. the Nefw Zealand Sulphufr Company claiming reeission of contracts to subscribe shares in the company, on the ground of misrepresentations, Mr Juist ice Crossman gave a ve.dict in favour of plaintiff with costs.
