TAX EVASION
GRAVE CHARGE Against Ex-U.A.S. Treasurer (Aus. & N.Z. Cable Assn.) (Received September’ 16 at 6.35 p.m.) WASHINGTON, September 15. Despite the refusal of a Pennsylvania Grand Jury in May last to indict Andreiwi Mellon (former United states Treasurer), for 1 alleged tax evasion (as cabled on May 8) the Department of Internal Revenue has to-day filed a brief with the Board of Tax Appeals. accusing Mellon that, while he was SecHetary of the Treasury in 1931, life engaged in “scheming’’ to evade taxes aggregating 3 075 thousand dollars. The brief said that’ Mellon had illegally reduced his taxable income by fictitious securities sales and other devices. Mellon immediately denied the validity of the brief. Tie ne-iterated his charge that he was subject to political persecution by the present Admin i.stration.
