WORLD’S BIGGEST DAM
OPENED IN SOUTH INDIA "I (Aus. and N.Z. Cable Assn.) CALCUTTA, August 21. Costing five and a-half millions sterling, the Alettur Dam, over the Kaveri River, in South India, has been completed. It is 'claimed to b e the biggest in the world. It is three times as long as the Assouan Dam over the • River Nile. It was opened to-day by Sir Georg e Stanley, Governor of Madras. The dam irrigates practically the whole of Tanjore and part of Trichinopoli districts.
