FEMALE LABOUR
AT JUVENILE RATES. CLOTHING TRADE DISPUTE. (Per Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, August 22. In the. clothing dispute here the main items were wages, hours, and the status of female apprentices. The employers wished to have all female, employees classed as learners for tw r o years and then as “improvers” for two years. The employees’ representatives argued that this would deprive them of security of employment. It was explained that practically the whole dispute centred on this apprenticeship issue, and if there were agreement on. this, the whole Council proceedings might be abortive. The Council, after much more discussion and without reaching a settlement, adjourned until to-mor-row.
