The judge Air Aleldruin. said that the speakers generally had dea.lt intelligently with the subject and the eommeneial aspect of the forests had been particularly discussed, but their history, aeslithic values, 'beauties, am] appeal to the tourist had only? been treated by a few. Air Paterson had illustrated the S|«ri tual value of th e forests, and made the best speech. The subject naturally suggested itself to both New Zealanders and visitors, so extensive were our forests, but sight had been lost of the past waste, especially in the North Island, with its distinctive trees, particularly the Kauri. A picture could have been drawn of the blooming of the rata, and the clematis and the part played by the forests in preserving bird life might have been mentioned, but the speakers generallv, while comprising themselves in most instances to the point of utility, had in all cases done creditably.
