U.S.A. WOMEN’S FINAL MISS JACOBS WINS. FOREST HILLS, August 19. In the final of the U.S. Women’s Tennis Championship, Miss Helen Jacobs beat Miss Sarah Palfrey 6/1, 6/4. In previous matches Miss Palfrey beat Miss Freda James 6/3, 3/6, 6/1; Miss Dorothy Andrus (Stamford, Connecticut) beat Baroness Levi 6/1, 6/4; Miss C. Babcock defeated Miss K. Stammers 6/3, 2/6, 6/4; Miss H. Jacobs defeated Miss E. Ryan 6/0, 6/1. The Jacobs-Babcock match offered the only first class tennis in the day ’s semi-finals. Miss Palfrey played far from her best tennis, but still held a wide advantage over the less experienced Miss Andrus. Miss Babcock played the title-hold-er on even terms until Miss Jacobs broke through her service in the twelfth game on hard placements to the corners of the court. In the final set Miss Jacobs played in true championship form, forcing Miss Babcock throughout. In six games she suffered only thirteen errors, including a double fault.
