Blackmun Cup DOBSON v. GREYMOUTH. In this game on Saturday, both teams had difficulty in fielding teanus Greymouth having to receive the services of two Dobson men. Co.wa:i Mid Tennent. Dobson won the toss, and were first on attack, Tennent in the Grey goal saving from Coutts King and Coutts tried snap shots, which Tennent cleared. Back again, Shortt shot inches past. Then Coutts gained a fruitless corner. Grey came with a good ‘run on the right and a centre, being met by Bayley, who scored a nice goal, with a rising shot. Dobson iwere away, and from a Eielee in front- of the goal, Ru-m scored,.—Dobson 1; Grey 1. Back again King sent over to Rush, who shot over close in. Rush secured, and shot for Tennent to miskick, the bad entering the net. — Dobson 2; Grey L Grey came down on the left. Smyth centering, tor Hunter to shoot inchewide. Dobson came bark, A. From the kick off, Richardson shot inches patst from well out. Grey camo in, and were awarded a penalty and Ila’l took the kick, a rising shot, but Pickering with wonderful quickness, tipped the ball over the bar for a corner. Smyth then made a ni<-' run, and gained a corner. Dobson attacked, Rush shooting over when close in. Outram gained another corner, and only good work by Hall and Robinson prevented a nothin- goal. Coutts and Hamilton bath showed up with shots, which Tennent cleared. Shortt, who was easily the best .man on the field, came in on his own, his rising shot going inches over. Rich ardsOn sent up to King, who with a fine shot, saw Tennent bring off a good save. Outram came in and shot. Tennent saving at the foot of the upright. Dobson gained a free kick well in, and the opposing players packed their goalmouth. Shortt took the kick, and, instead of shooting for goal, sent a nice pass across to Richardson, who, with a rising shot oven the heads of the players, scored a good goal. The end came shortlv after, with Dobson winners by 3 to 1 in what was a very poor game. WEST COAST BEAT NELSON. NELSON, August 18. CHATHAM CUP. THISTLE IN S.L FINAL. DUNEDIN, August 18. After over thirty hours’ heavy rain, the weather cleared early this morning, hut the Caledonian ground was heavy for the South Island final of 'the Chatham Cup competition between Northern (Dunedin) and Thistle (Christchurch). Soon 3'fter th P start Thistle started dose passing and the ball was sent out to Walker, who crossed to the right wing, and Simpson dashed up to score. Northern settled down, but the Thistle backs were strong, easily checking Northern’s rushing 'tactics. The local forwards were by no moans dangerous. The Thistle goalie was unlucky to be penalised for steps When T,itfl<> charged him. yet Northern could u"t score. Henderson was lifting the hall behind. The standard of play was low. Thistle wor P playing with method. Accepting a pass from the left, Simpson had a shot and the goalie saved, but D. Sutherland 'q'UiicklJy returned with a low shot, which was again cleared. Thistle’s defence was impressive. Thistle’s smart passing had Northern in trouble and the visitors were un-

lucky not to get a penalty goal, as handling by Coats was overlooked by the referee. Lack of penetration by Northern was obvious and the centre forward was being starved. AlcHugh had made play, the ball came in smartly, and Anderson’s hot shot was turned over by the Thistle goalie. Thistle’s football was vastly superior, yet thrust was lacking. Absence of shooting was a feature of the game. Neither side played anything like clars club football, and nearly one thousand spectators were given nothing to raise their enthusiasm. The final whistle sounded with the score: —Thistle one; Northern nil.
