(Our Own Correspondent.) Plea of Guilty to Serious Charge: WESTPORT .July 31. Two young men, Edward James Seymour and George Tottenham, appeared before Messrs E. IL Fox and G Al. Powell, yesterday, c'harged on renifi.nd w'ith freaking and entering premises known as Bottle-o, at th 0 rear of Elley and Sons butcher .shop, and with the theft of a quantity of beer, lemonade and sauna ges. Constable Bruce in evidence, stated that he visited a 'house near th e shop in company with Sergei til Mclntyre on July 22. On the grass outside the house they found Tottenham who was under the influence of liquor. He took a statement from Tottenham ia which hi* said that he went to the

house after a dance. Some liquor was there. II ( . was in the company of twj others. They helped themselves to the beer. Seymour arrived sonic time lat er, being brought in by two men. Ho (Seymour) had been lighting. Tottenham denied any knowledge as to where the beer came from. Witne-s continued that -after interviewing Tot tenham, h ( . went into the hause and found Seymour lying asleep on the floor in a front room. In various parts of the house he found the jars and bottles produced. The kitchen generally was in a state of great disorder. There was Home raw sausages on the table. Seymour also made n statement. The tyre lever was found on a chaw in the kitchen. Seymour said he had never seen it before. He was then arrested and charged With the theft of the beer and lemonade.

Sergeant Mclntyre, giving corroborative evidence, stated that when inter viewed, Seymour, in writing, admitted taking a jar uf beer, but denied interfering w’it'h the cash register. Mr Scully, on behalf of accused, pleaded guilty.

Accused were convicted and discharged on the charge of theft and weiy remanded for sentence to the Supreme Court to be held at Westport on September 5 on the charge of breaking and entering. Bail was allowed in each rase in the sum of £5O, with one surety of £5O.

Winter Relief Committee; The Mayor was in the chn'ir at a meeting u.f the Winter Relief Committee held last evening. It was reported that during the past fortnight 54 families with 201 children had been assisted w'ith food dockets. A quantity of foodstuffs had been donated by Griffen and Sons, Nelson; A. S. Patterson and Co., Wellington; AV. Strang Ltd., Invercargill, and AV. Gregg and Co., Dunedin. On the motion o-f the Mayor it was decided tn write the Unemployment. Board, making that the rate of relief paid to men working under Scheme 5 be reviewed, and the Board be requested to ’raise th e payments to standards ruling in other secondary districts. If was also decided that Air Webb and the Hon. Mr Mclntyre he asked to discuss the matter with the Unemployment Board.
