M.P., forwarded a copy of a letter received from the Minister of Internal Affairs, which stated that the application by the Board for participation in :;-n early Art Union for the purpose of augmenting the Children’s W’ard Fund, had been placed on record for consideration in due course. The Director-General of Health wrote as follows: “With reference to your letter of May 31. J am pleased to note the drop in the cost per occupied bed during the year. Before submitting your Board’s estimates for the approval of the Hon. the Minister, the provision of £271 for alterations to the kitchen and the installation of a cold storage was deleted and capital levy and subsidy adjusted accordingly. Kindly make the necessary alterations to your copy of the estimates.’’ The Chairman stated that the Finance Committee had gone into the matter and had considered a cold storage was absolutely necessary as far as the kitchen was concerned, as it was not up to the standard, and they considered they should make further application to the Director-Gen-eral to put in the cold storage. Mr Kent said it was essential to have the cold storage in order to prevent waste. It was decided to again write to the Minister on the subject. The Chairman stated that Messrs Forbes, Reynolds and Menzies, dentists, were quite prepared to come to the Hospital and give their services. Mr Reynolds had placed a chair in the room occupied by the ultra-violet rays. He had not made a gift of the cha.ir. but it would be there indefinitely. It was decided that a letter of thanks be forwarded to the dentists for their desire to co-operate. Mr Barrowman mentioned the meeting &t the Town Hall this evening in connection with the Children’s Ward, and hoped there would be a good attendance of citizens to give a helping hand. Mr Kent said that regarding a letter in the press that the appeal was clashing with the Mayor’s appeal, he would point out that the money spent jn the erection of the Children’s Ward would be spent in the town, and if everybody did that, unemployment would l>f alleviated. Mr Mulcare said the Government should subsidise the erection of the Ward. The Brunner Borough Council wrote stating that it was unable to make a grant for the Children’s Ward at present, but that it bad been assured by the Women’s Institute in Brunner that the Branch would make an effort to raise funds for the. purpose. Mr Barrowman said a. report, had been circulated around Greymouth that

somebody had died and left, a good sum of money for the Children’s Ward, but it was entirely wrong, and no sum of money had ever been loft by anyone. to be earmarked for the purpose named. Unfortunately they could not find out who had circulated the Tumour. The Chairman stated that, previous to taking the matter up, they had £6 tn hand. The Chairman, in making an appeal to the. public, said that as time went. On people would realise that they should assist in the very worthy object. Tic still had hope, that the ap peal would result in the rest of the district doing as well as Runanga had done. In spite of the unemployment distress, requiring everybody’s support. he felt the people would see their way (dear Io assist. The Runaaiga people hoped to hand over about £135 to the, Children’s Ward Fund. Mrs O’Brien remarked that it was a wonderful effort.
