WELLINGTON’S CIVIC CENTRE. (p'r Association) WELLINGTON, June 9. Councillor Duncan has given notice to move at the next meeting of the City Council, that to enable a review of the question of the future site tor* the Central Fire Station, as well as for other reasons, the Council decides to take no further action in regard to the proposals previously inside lor the establishment of a civic, centre on the block occupied by the existing fire station and other buildings. Cr. Duncan said he did not believe the people of Wellington ever realised what a civic centre would cost, that they ever wanted the scheme, or that they wanted it now. SURPRISE FOR MOTORIST. (’IIRISTCH URCIL June 10. A woman-driver of a small car got. a surprise last evening at Christchurch when she ran into a small boy at the intersection of Colombo and Hereford Streets. The ear was travelling slowly, and the boy was not hurt, but when sin* stopped within a foot or two of the scene of the collision. she found the car surrounded by nine constables and two sergeants. The sudden police response was due to the fact that the collision occurred , at the same moment the police were • changing beats, and the night duty men were marching to the intersec- 1 tion, when the accident occurred. The array of policemen rapidly attracted a large crowd. With so many men i available, the necessary details were i collected in a few moments, and from the centre of the crowd, the small box appeared being put on the way by a sergeant, who gave him a pat on the head.
