This brings to mind a competition arranged by n Thames enthusiast, who saw the chance to get a winter supply of good pumpkins “on the nod. ’ Having some special seed, he offered three prizes to those of his friends who cared to try out their gardening prowess. A day was set for the delivery of one pumpkin each from ten who agreed to compete. On the due date nine pumpkins duly materialised. The tenth grower was Captain McLeod, of the P.S. Terranora, which had been switched off the Thames-Auckland run to make special trips to M hakatane, in the Bay of Plenty, where the fertility of the land had acquired fame. On the Captain’s return to the Thames run he was requested to produce his pumpkin, which he said he had grown at Whakatane. His explanation for non-production of the “goods” was

that the pumpkin was too big to go into the hold of the Terranora, and his carrying license limited the weight he was permitted to carry on deck, so he had left it at Whakatane!
