N.Z. RUGBY UNION VETO

AGAINST MAORI TOUR. OF SEDDON SHIELD AREA. (per Press Association) WELLINGTON, June 7. An application from the Nelson Rugby Union for a tour this season of the Seddon Shield area by tho Maori All Black team was considered by the Management Committee of the New Zealand Rugby’ Union this evening. On the motion of the Chairman, Mr S. S. Dean, it was decided with regret that the Committee was unable to entertain the idea. It might consider it next season, said Mr Dean. The Canterbury Union advised that it had declined a challenge for the Ranfurly Shield from Wellington and Regarding the question of special challenges, the Union stated that it was of opinion that of challenges accepted. the only’ one which could possibly be considered a “ special’’ challenge was that from the King Country. Asked for a ruling, Mr Dean said he did not think the New Zealand Union should commit itself at the moment, if not conversant with the rota. ’‘lf we give a decision without being in possession of full facts, we might be open to criticism later,” ho said. “What they want us to say is that tho King Country' challenge is the only “special” challenge, but we don’t know. I suggest we ask Canterbury to place before us the terms under which the matches are being played.” This was agreed to.
