MAORI RATES

NATIVE MINISTER'S ATITUDE. ( I’ 1 r Association) ROTORUA, June 2. During the course of the sittings of the Native Lands Rating Commission at Rotorua, to-day, an allegation was imide that it was useless for local bodies to endeavour to obtain a. charging order for Native rates through the Courts, as such orders would be vetoed by the Native Minister. The Chairman of the Commission, Hon. A. D. McLeod, said that in the course of its sittings the Commission had frequently heard this statement, but had not been able to obtain concrete evidence that such power veto had been exercised by the Minister. If such evidence could be obtained, it would materially strengthen the hands of the Commission in the final report.
