REEFTON NOTES

(Our Own Correspondent.) REEFTON, December 5. The striking of a reef in No. 12 level of the Blackwater mine at Wai uta is reported. The reef is of good width, but its assay value is not known yet. The Company started prospecting for this stone in January last; and sunk tho shaft luO ieet cross-cut 150 feet and .put in a drive 550 feet in length. The reef was got in the. place where it was expected and stone was carried down in th 1 winze to within about 20 feet of where it was intercepted, so that there seem ed little prospect of it not being struck. Further particulars of its quality will be awaited with interest r l'he weather took a chilly turn on Saturday, and a southerly wind blow all day yesterday, though the after noon was fine. Last night heavs showers of rain fell and this mornin;', snow could be seen on th e back hills. This of course, has resr'ted in a cor responding fall in the temperature. At a .meeting held Reef ton. last week-end. which was very largely attended. it was decided to form a Ladies’ Cricket Club, and from the enthusiasm, displayed by the fair sex, tho Club should be a great success. Miss Rita Watson, of the Westport Hospital staff, is at present on a visit' to her parents, Mr and Mrs A. P. \V.‘itsorr. Crushington. Tkamafua and Waiuta cricket teams tried conclusions yesterday at Ikama tua when Ikamatua won by 72 runs; in a one-innings match. Ikamatua scored 144, of which Thomas made 106. Waiuta’s innings closed for 72, Vaughan being the principal scorer with L< inns. Tho following Inangahua presentatives have been selected to play Greymouth next week for the combined Hokitika-Inangahua team against Greymouth:—W. Blom, D. Hunt, J. Brough. Hannah. Green, Vaughan. D. and J. Great-bach. Fitzgerald. Thomas, Collins. A first eleven will be picked from tho combined teams to play No. 1 Greymouth team, and the remainder of the combined players will play a second Greymouth elevon Waiuta Bowling Club sent a couple of rinks to Reef ton yesterday to play the Reef ton Club. The green was in first-class order, and was much admired by the visitors. The games resulted as follows (Waiuta players mentioned firsti): —No. 1 rink. Doolev, i Morrison. Floyd, .Hawthorn (skip) 19: totals —Reerton ::G, Waiuta 29. Mr W. Wood (President of the Reefton Club) in welcoming the visitors,, said he was pleased to see them [resent and wished all a most enjoyable game. Mr Greengrass (President of the Waiuta Club) thanked the Reefton (player- for their cordial reception and the entertainment provided, and hoped Reefton players would visit Waiuta more frequently. They had enjoyed the games immensely. although they had not won. He congratulated them on their splendid eri'pii. which played almost perfectly.
