TO-NIGHT (TUESDAY). The success that has attended the previous productions of the Greymouth Philharmonic Society has caused a great deal of interest to be taken in the forthcoming production by the Society of “The Ancient Mariner.” This popular cantata will be sung by the leading vocalists of Greymouth, including Mrs Tarrant, Mrs Hutton. Misses Palmer, Powell and Broad, and Messrs J. Hadlund, A. Aims. R. Smith, F. Smith, E. McQueen and J. Boucher, with full orchestral accompaniment. The story, briefly, is as follows: “The Ancient Mariner stoppeth one of the three gallants bidden to a wedding feast and compels him to hear the tale. The Mariner tells how the ship sailed southward on fair weather until caught in a storm blast and carried towards the South Pole. An albatross — bird of good omen— came through the fog and followed the ship as it returned north to smooth waters where it became becalmed, and the Mariner inhospitably kills the bird. The alba, tross begins to be avenged and spirits plague the ship till only the Mariner is left, the crew dying one by one. Fin-, ally the curse is expiated and the | Mariner beholds his native country. | An additional item on the programme i is a duet for cello and clarionet, by Messrs Moss.
