RIMU’S BIRTHDAY

1882—1932. To-morrow Rimu will be 50 years old, and from far and near people arc coming to celebrate its jubilee. Away back in 1882, when gold was first discovered in the settlement, there were few on the field, but the news of the rich discoveries made soon brought hundreds of miners eager to obtain i their share of the golden profits. In i that and subsequent years Rimu was a flourishing township, but as most of the fields were worked out, the population began to dwindle until to-day the town is of very small dimensions. However, the pioneer spirit still prevails among the inhabitants and tomorrow they will honour the memory of those hardy pioneers who made the name of Rimu, as a goldfield, so important. There are still some of the old identities left and when they gather for the occasion, many tales, no doubt, will be related of when Rimu was a “canvas” town and when the desire for golden “finds” lured men on. Of the jubilee celebrations mention has already been made, and a fine day is all that is required for a large assemblage and successful results. The various committees have been tireless in their efforts to make the day a happy one, and judging by the enthusiasm aroused, Rimu’s Golden Jubilee will be something long to be remembered.
