SHIPPING HELD UP

Wellington Gales WELLINGTON, May 2. A southerly gale, which developed over the week-end, has caused considerable delay in shipping. The Makura, which was expected to arrive at Wellington from San Francisco at one o’clock to-day, did not arrive until four. The Makura ran into the gale on Sunday night, and was forced to reduce her speed. The Port Darwin, which arrived from London this morning, was also delayed by the gale. Other vessels were similarly hampered. The American steamer Golden Cross hove to off Cape Palliser. She expects to reach Wellington to-morrow. There was no work on the Wellington waterfront to-day. The gale moderated a little this afternoon, and to-night it had dropped considerably. The only departures today were the ferery steamers Rangatira, Tamahine and Matangi.
