DOBSON UNBEATEN Win for Cobden The Westland Cup games were advanced a stage on Saturday, in perfect weather, with the grounds in good condition. At Blackball the home team were decisively beaten by Dobson, by six goals to nil; Cobden or. their own ground defeated Greymouth, who had seven juniors playing for them, by five goals to three; while Runanga triumphed over Taylorville ly five goals to two, at Dunollie. SENIORS. COBDEN (5) -v. GREY (3). ! The teams were:— Cobden: Timlin, Sharp, Bennett, Cowie (2), Cameron, Maughan, McLean, Marley (2), and Crowe. Greymouth: Stitt, Restieaux, Hall,. Hillock, Connor, McDonald, McKnight, De Freatus, Lord, Woods and Steers. Grey won the toss and Cobden kicked off against the wind,' sweeping az once to the attack, and a shot by Maughan forced Grey to concede a corner which was cleared, play going to the other end, where Grey secured a corner, which was headed clear, but De Freatus shot for Timlin to save. Cobden again attacked and some pretty play ensued, M. Marley centring for R. Marley to shoot; the shot hit the upright and bounced in, an unsaveable shot. Cobden 1, Grey 0. From the kick-off Maughan carried play upfield, and McLean’s shot found the corner of the net. Cobden 2, Grey 0. Play now swung from end to end, Stitt making a good save after some nice work by Crowe, Maughan and M. Marley, but McLean took advantage of an easy shot and goaled. Cobden 3, Grey 0. At this stage Cobden were attacking persistently mainly through the right wing, while Restieaux was doing good work for the defence. Grey attacked and secured a corner, which was cleared by Maughan, who carried play upfield for Restieaux to save, Cobden securing a corner which was lobbed over the bai. From the goal kick Stitt brought off two good saves in quick succession and the attack was broken by McLean being offside in front of goal. Grey’s first score came when De Freatus found the net from close range. Cobden 3, Grey 1. This put Cobden on their mettle and they attacked vigorously, but failed to score and an offside by McLean saved a certain goal. From the free kick the play wont to the Grey inside left, Wood, who goaled. Cobden 3, Grey 2. Half time came shortly afterwards with the score unchanged. Cobden commenced the second spell with a determination to increase their small lead, but bad shooting spoiled their attempts, the game for the time being a succession of goal kicks, but eventually a shot by Maughan from a cross by McLean gave the goalie no chance. Cobden 4. Grey 2. Grey soon retaliated, Lord sending in a good shot from a melee in front of goal. Cobden 4, Grey 3. The next goal was the best of the day, when Crowe found the net from far out. Cobden 5, Grey 3. Play now repeatedly swung to M. Marley, who failed fully a dozen times to find the net, his shots being either wide or high, one of them hitting an upright and bouncing back into play for Crowe to shoot, but Stitt brought. aff a good save. Full time sounded with the scores Cobden 5 Grey 3.

The best of the Cobden team were McLean, Bennett, Maughan and M. Marley, while Restieaux, Stitt, Hillock and De Freatus did good work for G rey. Mr S. Hewison gave every satisfaction as referee. RUNANGA (5) v. TAYLORVILLE (2). This game was played at Dunollie before a fair attendance of spectators. The ground was in good order and conducive to bright football. Taylorville played good football in midfield and their combination and understanding between players was superior to their opponents, although they lacked finish. Over-eagerness marred Ruuanga’s play in the first half, but in the second half they showed their true form, their youth and vitality wearing Taylorville down. The scorers for the winners were Malpass (3), Winstanley and Mossop one each. For Taylorville! Wick and Thomas scored. The outstanding players for Runanga were Malpass, Gore and Ennor in goal. The best of the Taylorville team were Pickering, Thomas and Tennent. Mr D. Barnes was an impartial referee. JUNIORS. DOBSON A v. TECHNICAL. (By “Sentinel.’’) These teams, which met at Dobson, were:— .

Dobson: Dixon, Ford, Mills, Tennant, Ross, Clarke, R. Wick, Nordstrom, Hamilton. Bateman and E. Wick. Tech: Lee, Marshall, Sinclair, Badley, Armstrong, Smythe, Ewan, Sharp, Vattghan, Jackson, Pattison. Referee: Mr R. Muir. Technical won the toss and Dobson kicked off. Tech bore down on the loft and a shot from Jackson made Dixon the first keeper to handle. R. Wick had a good run on Dobson right and shot narrowly past. The first corner fell to Technical, which Dobson cleared. Under pressure Tennant was forced to concede another corner, which was again cleared. Tech was playing well, especially on the left wing. Dobson broke away and Nordstrom shot narrowly past. Dobson showed signs of brightening up and Smythe was forced to give away a corner from which Hamilton scored. Dobson 1, Tech 0. Marshall, Technical’s left back, was playing a splendid game, and some of his clever moves

were a treat to watch. Again Tech pressed via the left wing but Ford cleared. Nordstrom broke through and Marshall was, forced to give away a corner which was cleared. Tech broke away and Dobson’s defence were hard put to it to keep their goal intact. A good shot by Armstrong from well out found Dixon on the mark. Tech should have scored when Ross kicked back into his own goal and they certainly deserved a goal at this stage. Half-time came with Dobson leading by one goal to nil. A spell of midfield play followed the opening of the second half. Tech pressed and shots by Jackson and Pattison went past the uprights. End to end play followed, Hamilton shooting over and Ford spoiled a likely movement started by Vaughan. R. Wick had'* a nice shot and Lee showed his worth by punching clear. From a free kick just outside the penalty area Marshall scored, hit ting the underside of the crossbar and giving Dixon no chance. Dobson 1, Technical 1. It was now a ding-dong struggle, with both ends being visited in turn. From a breakaway Nord strom scored for Dobson. Dobson 2, Tech 1. R. Wick had a good shot which Lee palmed and Marshall cleared. From a free kick just outside the penalty box Marshall tried to repeat his performance before, but shot narrowly past. Full time sounded shortly after. Technical were decidedly unlucky as a draw would have been a fair reflex of the game. Marshall, Technical’s left back, was, in my opinion, the best man on the field. Technical has got a good team, and as the season progresses more will be heard of it.

RUNANGA (2) v. GREYMOUTH (0). Grey mouth found it difficult to field a team on Saturday, as seven of the usual junior players were playing senior; nevertheless they put up quite a creditable showing against the clever Runanga eleven, eventually meeting defeat by two goals to nil, after a hard-fought game. Mr T. Clarke was an efficient and impartial referee. THIRD GRADE. RUNANGA (2) v. TECHNICAL (2y In the third grade game played on Saturday Runanga drew with Technical after an exciting and interesting game, in which each side scored two goals. Mr J. Hardie gave every satisfaction as referee. MARIST (5) v. GREYMOUTH (Ly lu this game Marist had an easy win over Greymouth, many of whose players have recently gone up to junior. Nevertheless the game was productive of some good lively football. The final score was Marist 5, Grey 1. Mr T. Paton ably controlled the game. AT OTHER PLACES. CHRISTCHURCH, April 30.
