COURSING

Greymouth Meeting COWL AND BLACK SILK TIE. A fair attendance witnessed the opening meeting of the Grey District Coursing Club at the Wingham Park Plumpton on Saturday afternoon. The weather was fine and the ground in good order, and, with exceptionally strong hares, the coursing was of a very interesting nature. The courses set were gruelling for the dogs and the kills were very few. The open stake handicap resulted in a tie between the Ikamatua dog Cowl and the Greymouth dog Black Silk, and the cup donated by Dr. G. W. Meade, which was not run outright, still remains the property of the Club, and will be further competed for at a meeting on May 21. Lady Disdain and Fair Queen met in the first course, which was indecisive. Tn the second course Fair Queen defeated Lady Disdain by 33 points to 3. Cowl then met Blue Spec, having a comfortable win by ten points to 3. Black Silk won by default from Nancy Dale afld ran a bye with another outside dog, winning by 4 points to 3.

Ray of Hope won by default from Mossvale, and ran a bye with an unnamed puppy, winning the course. Red Star and Molly Morn each gained three points in their first course, and in the deciding course Red Star won by 6A points to 2. The first course of the second round saw Cowl defeat Fair Queen by 3A

points to 2. Ray of Hope went lame following his first course, and defaulted to Black Silk, who ran a bye with a puppy, winning by 6A points to 2|. Red Star secured the bye. In the semi-final Cowl (41 points') beat Red Star in a very gruelling course, Black Silk having the bye. The final saw the two dogs, Cowl and Black Silk, gain seven points each, both giving the spectators an exciting time in an effort to catch a strong hare. Cowl was lame and Black Silk very tired and instead of running an extra course the owners, Messrs B. Waring (Cowl) and L. Morresey (Black Silk) agreed to divide the stake.

The first course of a private match between Mr W. Robson’s Fair Queen and Mr F. Heslin’s Blue Spec, was undecided, and in the second course Fair Queen won by three points to two. The meeting was very ably conducted by the officials of the Club, whilst Mr J. Braithwaite gave every satisfaction as judge. A fine greyhound puppy by Mr L. McVicar’s Mossvale —Blowing Bubbles has been purchased by Mr G. W. Osbourne, of Reefton.
