GREY DEMONSTRATION To-day’s Arrangements This afternoon at two o’clock, a demonstration is to be made by the local unemployed and organised workers, on the occasion of May Day. They will assemble at the Railway {Station and ma th to the Band Rotunda by probably the same route as last year, viz: A ong Mawhera Quay to the Band Rotunda, thence up Guinness Street to the Post Office, along Tainui Street and into Mackay Street, returning again to the Rotunda, where speeches will be delivered. Messrs W. Purdy. F L. Turley, A. McLagau anj B. Topp will be the speakers. Contingents of workers are expected from Runanga and Wallsend, while it is intended that th • Blackball Pipe Band shall lead the march. The Greymouth unemployed will all be present. Mr Fairmaid (Borough Engineer), has stated that the rcl'ef work usually don? on Monday, may be done on Tuesday instead.

Interviewed by an “Argus” reporter, Mr R. Marley, Secretary of the Unemployed, slated that he had heard that some shopkeepers were apprehensive of the safety of their shops, fearing something in the nature of Auckland. “I want it made perfectly clear,” he said, “that Monday’s demonstration is to bo entirely a peaceful one and I am certain nothing of an untoward nature will occur at all.” CHRISTCHURCH, April 30.

May Day celebrations are to be held here to-morrow. They will take the form of a procession that will assemble at the Trades Hall at 2.15, and a massed demonst ration at Cranmcr Square at 2.45 p.m. Mr E. J. Howard, M.P., will be the principal speaker in tho afternoon, and Mr A. J. Lee, M.P., at an evening meeting in the Grand Theatre.

If the weather is unfavourable the procession and the open-air meeting will be postponed for a week. The evening meeting, however, will be proceeded with.

Neither the Mayor (Mr D. G. Sullivan, M.P.), nor the police authorities anticipate any trouble in connection with the May Day celebrations that have been arranged for to-morrow afternoon. Recognising the restless condition of the country at the present time, and taking into account the fact that there is usually some irresponsible person in a crowd, every possible precaution will be taken.
