CYCLONE DISASTER
In New Hebrides SHIPPING AND OTHER LOSSES. (Aus. & N.Z. Cable Assn;. SYDNEY, April 28. A Vila (New Hebrides) message states that a cyclone on the nights of April 25 and 26, unroofed houses and stores. Lighters were sunk in Vila harbour. Trading cutters were driven ashore, and inter-island shipping was forced to shelter. Much damage was” done to the plantations. The Bums Philp steamer Malinoa was driven On a reef on the island of Aoba. The p'assengers, provisions and mail were landed safely. Attempts to refloat the vessel failed. It is an cx ’ ceptionally treacherous coast. Tile sea is now calm. Damage in the northern islands is unknown, but it is anticipated to bo severe On the eastern and southern coasts. Vila is on the sheltered western side., and thus escaped the full force of the hurricane.
