WAIUTA NOTES

COur Own Correspondent.) Dr. J. H. J. Logan arrived from Huntly during the week-end, and has taken up his duties as Resident Medical Officer to the Waiuta Miners’ Medical Association. Messr s J. Scoble (Inspector of Mines) and J. AlcGregor (Workmen’s Inspector) visited here last week. Miss M. Sharp, who has been in> charge of the local hospital for the past ten months, is spending a holiday at the Glaciers, prior to returning to Christchurch. His Grace Archbishop O’Shea (WeL lington) visited here on Monday, and administered the Sacrament of Confirmation i u the evening. He was assist, ed by Rev Fathers Seymour. S.M., and Aldridge S.AI. (Reefton). There was a large congregation present ,to witness the ceremony.

A Leap Year Ball was held in the Miners’ Hall on Saturday evening, when despite unfavourable weather, a largo crowd was present. Delightful music was supplied by Cowan’s orchestra, and a dainty supper was dispensed by tho Commit lee. Mesdames W. Lines and W. Stcphen.s had charge of the floor. Dur ing the evening extras were contrL 'buted by Mesdames Ord. Stephens, and Miss Warren. Many pretty frocks wore worn by the ladies present, and thc hall was tastefully decorated. On Al unday morning a number of ex-patients of Matron Sharp' assembled at th e hospital to bid her farewell. The patients were all ex-mater-nity patients, and were accompanied by the young Waiutaites whom Mat run Sharp' had been responsible for ushering into this world. Airs J. Rodden. who presided, spoke of the many kindnesses, car? and attention bestow ed on the patients by th e departing guest, during their stay in hospital, and in asking her acceptance of a handsome Irish linen tea set, on behalf of those present, regretted her departure, and wished her every success and prosperity in the future. Matron Sharp suitab'y replied, and in thanking those presort for their useful g : ft, stated that her work in Waiuta had been a pleasure, and she regretted having to leave so many kind friends. AL rning tea was then dispensed, and afier being introduced to Dr. Logan, and having a group photograph taken, the happy gathering dispersed, with the singing of “Auld Lang Syne.”

Air R. Davis, who underwent an operat’on at the Reef ton Hospital last week, is making satisfactory progress. Tho many friends of the genial “Dick,” wish him a speedy return to good 'health, and hope to see him on “deck’ - ’ oik-0 again in a few weeks’ time. Ideal weather prevailed for the foot-1 ball fixtures for the week-end. At Rugby Kiwis (Reefton) defeated Wai. uta by eight po’nts to seven, after an evenly-contested game. Mr J. Fitzgerald gave every satisfaction a s referee. Rapahoe juniors defeated Waiuta by 1.2 pointy to 11 in the League code at Blackwater. The gam e was very even and exciting. Air G. Harris was a capable referee. Waiuta seniors defeated Blackball, at Blackball, by 15 points to nine. The Rugby fixture for this week-end is Waiuta v. Cronadun, at Cronadun. The following will represent" the Waiuta League Club in their fixtures for the week-end:—Seniors v.
