WAIMAKARIRI STRIKE

Efforts for Settlement by messes ARMSTRONG AND McCOMBS. (Per Press Association). CHRISTCHURCH, March 31. Mr J. McCombs and Mr H. J. Armstrong, M’s. P., made an effort to-day to settle the strike of the unemployed men against the conditions under which the relief work is offered by the Unemployment Board, and the Wainiakarari River Trust. They had a conference with the representatives of the Trust this morning. A suggestion was made that the men should accept work until the ’next meeting of the Trust on April 10, in the expectation that possibly the Trust might be able to subsidise their wages to some extent. Neither of the parties to the conference had power to make an agreement. Mr Armstrong addressed a general meeting of the unemployed men tonight, submitting this proposal. 1 The press was not admitted to the meeting, which was very noisy. No statement was made as to the outcome of the -meeting, but the indications were that the proposal was not accepted.
