COBDEN FOOTBALL CLUB

PRESIDENT’S ANNUAL REPORT. The President’s report, which is as follows, was read and adopted:— It is with great pleasure that ! present the annual report of the Club’s affairs for the past season, together with the balance sheet for the members ’ perusal. It was a most successful season from all points of view. I wish to congratulate the committee and the members generally for the splendid club spirit displayed which has placed the dub in its present position.

Finance.— Our revenue for the season reached the sum of £79/19/7 and our expenditure was £79/17/4. The expenditure, at first sight, looks large but when you deduct £5O/4/1 which was paid off our pavilion from this amount, our ordinary expenditure was £29/13/3, against £4.4/17/5 last year, which must be considered satisfactory. Competitions.— Teams were entered in all grades from senior to fourths, including two teams in the junior grade, and I am proud to say that we have the largest membership of any club on the Coast. Seniors.— This team had a most successful season, winning the Wallsend-Taylorvillc Es--1 tate’s Cup and the Black and White Distilleries Caps in the main competition. In view of the fact that this was their second year in the senior competition it must be considered a splendid achievement. Juniors:— A. and B. teams were entered in this grade and although they did not meet with the success of former years, I must congratulate them on winning the 7-aside cup at Hokitika, thereby putting the Club’s name on every Junior trophy on the Coast for which we are eligible. I would like to take this opportunity of congratulating the Kumara Club on their meritorious performances in nearly equalling the record of our 1929 Juniors by winning all the Junior trophies except the 7aside at 'Grey. Thirds.— Owing to a largo number of players being promoted to Junior, the thirds were not as strong as in previous years. They could have done much better if they had paid more attention to training. Fourths.— A team was entered in this grade, but owing to the shortage of grounds, these boys only played two or three games throughout the season.

Training.— Our new Gym. was completed before the commencement of the season, and the Club thus had training facilities superior to those of any other club. Mr Sid Carleton, exAll Black, who trained the members on one occasion, congratulated the Club on having such fine quarters. Our thanks are due to him for the valuable hints he gave us on training. The teams attended training fairly well, but with such fine facilities available it is hoped that greater attention will be paid to this branch of our activ ities during the coming season. Younger members of the Club should follow the example of the seniors as their victories were undoubtedly due to strict training. A game of football can only be enjoyed by the player in comparison with his fitness. To get 100 per cent, pleasure he must be thoroughly fit. Accident Fund.— It is very pleasing to see a credit balance in this fund of £25/6/3. The call on this fund throughout last season was particularly heavy; several members receiving relief for doctor’s and hospital expenses. This fund is one of the finest assets that the Club has and it is worthy of the support of every member. It is hoped to build the fund, whereby the injured players may receive a little out-of-pocket expenses, besides the doctor’s and hospital fees. Supporters and Ladies’ Committee.— It is very pleasant to note the way in which the people of Cobden have by various means assisted the Club, and I wish to take this opportunity of thanking them most heartily. I would like especially to thank the Ladies’ Committee who have worked so hard at the gala, the dances, the banquet, etc., and thereby made them such pronounced successes. Without mentioning any individual names I think wo have one of the finest ladies’ committees one could wish to meet with anywhere. As a result of the gala and dance held on March sth, we are in the happy position of only owing £6 on our pavilion. Social side.—The seniors visited To Kinga and Reefton to play friendly matches, winning at both places. The Juniors visited Ikamatua, Westport and Millerton, winning the two first named and losing to Millerton. Various dances were held during the season and proved generally successful. In conjunction with the swimming club the annual picnic was held at Camerons where a pleasant day was spent. At the conclusion of the season a banquet was hold to celebrate the Club’s successes and although it showed a debit it was worth while. In conclusion, I wish the members every success next season.
