FIRE. (Per Press Association). PAHIATUA, March IG. Th? J. B. Tulloch Drapery Company’s premises and stock were destroyed by fire last night. The stock was insured for £2,800 in the Alliance and Phoenix Offices. The building,; which was owned by L. Hartley, was insured for £1,700, in the Alliance Office. STOWAWAY PUT ASHORE. GISBORNE, March 16. The steamer, Brunswick, bound from Wellington to San Pedro, called in the roadstead this morning, and sent ashore a stowaway, .Jack Hansen, 42, a native of Sweden, who was brought before the Court, and remanded for a week. Hansen stowed away in a lifeboat at Wellington on Tuesday and remained hidden till the ship was well out at sea. His calculations went astray however, and when he emerged, last night, convinced that the ship was two and adialf days from New Zealand, Hansen discovered that the coast was still within easy range. Wireless instructions were given to the Master, to call at Gisborne, where the police were waiting in a launch, and took thp man into custody. ROTORUA FATALITY. ROTORUA, March IG. A two-year-old Maori child, Adam Whakaue, was drowned in the Waititi stream, flowing into Lake Rotorua this afternoon. Apparently the child wan- | dered away while playing, and fell into the water. His absence was not noticed for a-quarter of an hour, when his mother searched and made the tragic discovery.
