FURTHER ATTACKS

General Chiang Kaishek, was to-day interviewed, following on Iris acceptance of the post of Chairman of the Military Commision. He declared that all China wished for was the peaceful settlement of the Sino-Japanese dispute, but if Japan did not cease her aggressive action. China would be prepared to light to the bitter end. He did not put much confidence in the Japanese announcement of an intention to withdraw their Ninth Divi sion from Shanghai. Actually, he said, they were were preparing for further military operations. JAP JINGOISM. LONDON, March 13. The “News-Chronicle” says that dispatches from Japan indicate a military coup is imminent there; Doctor Nitobe, former Under-Secretary of the League of Nations, was dragged from a hospital by military officers and forced to apologise for saying that the militarists were as dangerous as the Communists. A tide of violent nationalism is sweeping Japan and unless the attempt to form a National Government succeeds quickly, there may be an uprising. SHANGHAI. March 13. The resignation of Major General Wutechchen, as Mayor of Shanghai, was due to a conflict of opinion between the Chinese Government factions, after he had promised that the anti-Japanese agitation would be ended.
