(Our Own Correspondent.; HOKITIKA, February 19. The m.v. “Gael” o n leaving Okum on Wednesday, went to Jackson’s Bay, where 350 sheep were taken on board, and then went on to Greymouth, where they were discharged. The “Gael” returned to Hokitika last night, at 6.30 o’clock. Should the bar at Okarito be workable, the “Gael” will probably sa : l for that port to-night. A charge of common assault, in the Juvenile Court yesterday, before Mr W. Meld rum, S.M., was dismissed. Heavy rain set in this morning, and continued throughout the day. For the purpose of providing funds to rebuild the hut and baths at Toaroha Hot Springs, a grand ball will be held at Kokatahi Hall, next Wednesday evening. Music will be supplied by the Black Hand Orchestra, and a good time is guaranteed. Prices of admission are: Ladies Is, gentlemen 2s 6d. The Maori Choir, of whom there were favourable recollections, paid another welcome visit to Hokitik a last n’gb.t, appearing at the Princess Theatre before a large an appreciative audience. The opening was a welcome by M.rs Knowles Smith, which was acknowledged by the party in true Maori fashion. Then followed in rapid succession a series of hymns and part songs, poi dances, hakas, Maori songs, instrumental music and an address by the lady in charge. The programme, which lasted a full two hours, was a very bright and versatile one, and proved very enjoyable, the audience marking their approval in marked terms and demanding many encores, which we e freely given. Two and a-half hours were occupied in the Warden’s Court yesterday in consideration of an application by the Mayor and Councillors of the Borough of Ross for a water race. The application was made by Mr J. Murdoch, Mr A. R. Elcock appearing for objectors. Extensive evidence was taken, the application finally being granted, judgment being given for costs, £5 6s against the objectors. Mr Elcock gave notice of appeal at the conclusion. Summing up, the Warden said that the local body appeared to have a stronger case than if an individual were appear:ng. The application appeared to bo quite in order, and was tendered by a public body who were serving public, pui poses, not private, and he could see no reason why the application should not be granted. In the Mag : st:ate’s Court yesterday afternoon, Elizabeth E- Harding (Mr Sellers) sought to recover the sum of £8 8s 8d from Joanna 'Boyd (Mr Murdoch). claimed to be amount due in wages. After evidence by claimant, defendant and one witness, lhe Magistate gave his decision in favour of plaintiff to the amount of £6 and costs £1 15s 6d. The Hokitika Cricket Sub-Associa-lion has decided to close its senior competition, of which the Kanieri Club has been announced the winners. The position of the teams is as follows:— Kanieri 7 wins, 18 points; Rimu 4 wins, 9 points; Ruatapu 4 wins, one tie, 8 points; Hokitika 2 wins, 5 points; Ross one tie 1 point. Kanieri as the winner lof the competition, is now entitled to play Marist, the winner of the competition in Greymouth, and the match will be played a t an early date. Now I hat the third round has been abandoned. it is suggested that inter-repre-sentative fixtures among the southern division teams should be played, such as Rimu and Hokitika v. Ruatapu and Ross, and the match be played on the day that Kanieri js engaged at Greymouth. Inquiries arc also on foot concerning a representative match between the Hokitika and Greymouth Associations. The junior competition is in a very interesting position. Rimu has 8 po’nts with one match to be played, Ross is next with three games to go, while Hok'tika and Kiwi each have five points, an ( ] each has four matches to play. Matches yet to be played in the second round are: Hokitika v. Ross, at Ross, on February 21st; Kiwi v. Hokitika. The draw for the remaining matches in the third round is as fol'ows: —Hokitika v.
