French Senate TURNS DOWN WOMEN’S FRANCHISE. (Aus. & N.Z. Cable Assn.) PARIS. February 16. The Government was defeated in the Senate on the Women's Franchise Bill, and later resigned. The Government was defeated by 157 votes to 134. The Senate refused to grant February 19 as the date for debating the general policy of the Government. the acceptance of which M. Laval made a question of confidence. The defeat necessitates M. Tardieu’s immediate return from Geneva, leaving M. Boncour to represent France. M. Barthou may form a Cabinet.
