LANDING AT MADEIRA By Poruguese Forces SHELLING BY NAVALS. (Aus. & N.Z. Cable Assn.) LISBON, May 1. The cruiser Vasco Da Gama unopposedly bombarded Bico-Cruz, near Funchal. Troops landed and captured munitions. (Received May 2 at £.5 p.m.) LISBON, May 1. The Portuguese Government is still landing troops at Madeira. The earlier detachments are now struggling. They are impeded by the hilly country. The rebels’ short-range guns arc unable to reply to the marine bombardment. The Government forces have recovered two steamers from the rebels. The warship Vasco Da Gama fired two shots. One smashed the Registrar’s house, .a mile from the hotel where British residents are accommodated, and narrowly missing an adjacent building containing fifteen children.

Marines and bluejackets were landed to protect British lives and property. Foreign residents and visitors were not harmed. The civilians were not injured.
