CHARMING CREEK MINE

Advice was received from the Charmi ing Creek Branch that an attempt was i being made to introduce the tribute ; ; system there. This mine had been* I idle since the Christmas holidays. Just 'before Ihe holidays the district president and the secretary visited the ’mine and found the ventilation to be far below the requirements of the Coni Mines Act. The management undertook to. make improvements in the airways, and it was understood that these would be proceeded with during the holidays and that the mine would be re-opeued as soon as they ware completed. However, the mine did not resume operations after the holidays, and at the end of January the men were given one day’s notice of dis missal, allegedly on account of slack ness of trade. The only work done, nt the mine after that was carried on by the mine officials. Attempts hav< been made* recently to induce mem bers of the union to work the mine ‘ on the tribute system, but those have failed.
