All who know the quality of | his service will regard this as a poor I economy for Australia, even in this time when it is necessary to cut expenditure. Alr Brookes has establishied a reputation as an international statesman, and it is gratifying to know that he will proceed home by ; slow stages across the country, com- ' ing in touch especially with university 'centres. Mr Brookes, by personal sacrifice, will not imperil any goodwill which he has won here for Australia. Rather does his act prompt the hope that conditions will be so improved uu borne that his office will soon bo- re- ' opened with Mr Brookes once more as ' High Commissioner.
