SPAIN’S FUTURE
Government’s Policy (Aus. and N.Z. Cable Assn.) (Received February 4 at 9 p.m.) MADRID, February 3. The spiritual peace and material tranquility of all Spaniards, by the complete welding of the past with the future without anyl abrupt changes, and the keeping of everything which the Dictatorship has left in its constructive policy, are the chief aims of the new Government, says General Berenguer, in addressing the Captains General. He believes that Spain has entered on a path leading quickly to a splendid renaissance. A rousing welcome was given to released artillery officers and men who were imprisoned a year ago for their revolt against General De Rivera. All variety of students have resumed a peaceful life, and the whole city is tranquil under General Berenguer’s programme of restoring full constitutional liberty. LONDON. February 2. “The Times’s” correspondent at Madrid says: The new Cabinet held its first meeting and took sweeping decisions, showing that General Berenguer ’s determined to re-establish the constitution in every particular. Five University professors, who opposed the dictatorship, including the famous philologist, Unamuno, at present exJed, will be reinstated. The Marquess D’Estella received a firm reminder that soldiers on the active list must not meddle with politics. The Duke of Almodovar has communicated with D’Estella demanding reparation by arms, for insults offered six years ago.
