WAIUTA NOTES.

(Our Own Correspondent.) Mr and Mrs D. Costigan and Mrs Parley left for Greymouth on Saturday to attend the funeral of their late mother, Mrs L. Costigan. The sympathy of their many Waiuta friends is extended to them in their bereavement. The many Waiuta friends of Mr Joseph Gardiner heard with i egret of his death which took place suddenly at Reefton on Monday. Mr Gardiner was a nopular member of the staff of the Reefton Hospital for a number of years, and the manner in which the grounds were kept were a tribute to his energy. The sympathy of his Wciuta friends is extended to the relatives. Mrs McDonald, and Messrs Angus McDonald, Miller, and Bradley (Ngakawau) were visitors to Wain'a for the week-end, as the guests of Mr and Mrs F. Dean.

Mrs Jack Byrne (Reefton) was a visitor here on Friday, Mr Morgan, who has been visiting the North Island, has returned. Mr J. O Byrne, who has represented the ratepayers of the Antonio’s Riding in the Inangahua County Council, and also on the Inangahua Hospital and Charitable Aid Board for the past six years, will be again a candidate at the forthcoming elections. By his good work during the past term of office, Mr Byrne has proved a capable representative of the ratepayers on both bodies. The opening games in the Flannigan Cup were played on Sunday last. Reefton defeated Waiuta at Reefton by 21 points to 17, while Maiwheraiti defeated Totara Flat at Blackwater by IS points to nil. Some good form was displayed by the various players, and there are favourable indications for an interesting competition. The basket ball contest held on Saturday evening in aid of the funds of .the Public Tennis Club, was well attended. The music was supplied by Miss Rita Woolhouse, assisted by Messrs Staples, Smith, A. Purton and/ Ramsden. A dainty supper was serv-j ed, and one and all spent a very en-( jcyable evening. The Waiuta junior footballers leave on Saturday morning for Denniston, where two games will oe played during the week-end. The party will number about twenty, and will be under the capable management of Mr Toney Anisy.

A meeting was held in the Samp e Rooms on Thursday evening la?t for the purpose of forming a Ladies’ Hockey Club. Mr W<. G. Staples presided over a good attendance of players and supporters. After some discussion it was decided to form a club, and to form two teams. The election of officers resulted as follows: Patron. Mr E. W. Spencer; President, Mrs R. A. Stewart; Vice-Presidents, Mesdames McEwin, Hempseed, Chisnail, Miss Hunt, Dr Wicken, and Messrs P. H. Jones, J. Collins and B. T. Doughtv; Club Captain, Mrs Rodden; Secretary and Treasurer, Miss Hampton; Committee: Mesdames Jone?, Lewis, Rodden, Misses Jean Cameron, Jean Collins, and L. Beckwith; sole selector, Mr P. O’Donnell; referees and coaches, Messrs Staples, Fitzgerald. O’Donnell, Howard and Doughty. The membership fee was fixed at 2/6. A goo 1 deal of enthusiasm wag displayed when the Club opened the season on Sunday afternoon! with a practice game—Married v. Single—at the Recreation Ground, the single ladies winning by one to nil, after an interesting game. Mr J. Howard controlled the game in a capable manner. Parents and householders generally are reminded that the election of the School Committee takes place at the Schoolroom on Monday evening next at 8 p.m.
