Heeney will probably be in Brown ’a corner also. (Reed. April 16 at 7 p.m.) NEW YORK, April 15. At Toronto, the negro, Gains (Canada) secured the verdict} in a ten round contest over Cook (Australia). Gains weighed 18941bs and Cook “weighed 1944 lbs. The Negro led in the first round pounding the Australian to the ropes with blows to the head. The second round was but Gains came to the fore in the third with hard lefts to the body. .Cook was then missing, and he continued to miss in the fourth round, but landed several stiff punches to the head, drawing blood from his opponent’s nose. The fourth round was even. Both men fought furiously, taking punches and giving punishment in the fifth, but the Canadian still led. The Negro had the Australian dizzy in the sixth round under a terrific .attack, taking this round by a wide m? rgin. The seventh round found Cook’s nose bleeding and his opponent making a target of it. The Australian seemed content to hold on, and this was Gains’ round.

Cook fought more gamely in the eighth, and the round was even. Cook was desperately tired in the ninth round and he swung blindly. Ho tried hexing the Negro and the round was even. The tenth was a hammer .<nd tongs affair, bol.h mon trying to Haughte, each other, hut if was Gain’s round. Offer to Heeney TO EIGHT AT BERLIN (Received April 16 at 10 : 5 p.m.) NEW YORK, April 15. Mr Joe Jacobs, the Am, Oric< n agen for Schmeling, the German boxer, states that Toni Heeney has received an offilr from a Berlin prompter to meet Schmeling in Juno at Berlin.

A HOKITIKA GRIEVANCE. (To the Editor.) Sir, —In your report of the Runang:t iourney in Monday’s issue, it state? that Wright, who won his round of th” light-weight division, was over weight 10.3, and Moore 9.12 was awarded the trophy, but it happened to be Moor” who weighed 10.3. and Wright went 9.9. Certainly I refused to let Wright give away weight, as Moore should have been in w-elter-weight. Now;, Sir, how can Moore claim the lightweight when he goes 10.3? Ten stone is the limit. It strikes one that those Associations on the Coast can do anything that pleases them, and 1 claim tha trophy for Wright, and sincere 7;/ hope the Runanga Association can see their way clear to give Wright wha‘; he is entitled to —a fair go. As the West Coast championships arc shortly to come off. it does not give one much heart to rain- I have a big school down in Hokitika, and there are sev eral likely lads who would shine out but to get a set-back, like Wright did at Runanga, I think it is better to keep them away, as a thing like tha' would break a good' boy’s neart. Thanking you forj the space.—l am, etc, B. BIDDULPH. Hokitika, April 16.
