MR CHARLES HAINES
ADVERTISING VETERAN DEAD. pi BUILDER OF GREAT ORGANISATION. MAN OF KINDLY DISPOSITION. The death is anounced- from Wellington of Air Charles Haines, governing director of -the Charles Haines. Advertising Agency Ltd. Mr Haines was 69 years of age. As a youth he was on the staff of the New Zealand Railways from 1879 to 1885. He then entered the journalistic field, joining the “Wairarapa Daily Times”. Masterton. He filled the positions of reporter, sub-editor, managing editor until 1892, when he went to Wellington and founded the firm that he had been connected with ■ ever since.
Advertising was in its infancy when Mr Haines set up for himself, and he was the first independent agent in the Dominion. The organisation has been built up in the intervening years to a concern of large proportions with branches in all the principal centres.' During the last few years Mr Haines had not taken a very active part in the business, the duties of managing director having been handed over to Mr Will Appleton. Mr Haines had a kindly disposition and was held in the highest esteem by business men throughout the Dominion. He travelled a good deal, having made several world tours. He married late in life Miss Mauld Eglin, of Dunedin. He had no family but is survived by his wife. For a quarter of a century prior to his marriage Mr Haines lived at the Wellington Club.
