WESTPORT NOTES.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) WESTPORT, December 8. The transformer for the Railway Department’s electric crane was landed in Westport a couple of weeks ago, and it may not he long before the crane itself arrives. The assembling will not take long, as there is nothing very intricate about it. Messrs Vickcrman and Lancaster, the Borough Council’:electrical consulting engineers, about a month or so ago advised that attention should be given to the Waretea for an augmented supply at Lake Roe.iifort. As far as is known to the public. no move has been made in that direction., although a survey was made as far back a« the time of the Gen oral Exploration Company’s operations in that, district, and it is understood that the plans are in Westport at the present time. The distance is approxi mutely one mile thirty chains. In view of the consulting engineers’ ad vice, and the control gear at the iaki being inoperative, and also that thi leakage at the lake is assuming largei dimensions, it is past understanding why something is not being done. The proprietors of the Picture Theatre, notified the Council that they had in stalled an engine capable of utilising “ither gas o r oil. the reason given be ing that the voltage supplied by the Borough Electrical Department was un dependable. It is no good sacking one engineer, and looking for another, in eases of this nature. The Council hav? had all the facts before them. They have had the advice of the foremost firm of electrical engineers in the Do : minion; the Borough Consulting En gineer advised the securing of the Wareatea water rights,, and the Borough Solicitor secured them. The poo pie arc standing loyally to the elec trical system. Why this lethargy? A short sitting of the Magistrate’s Court was held yesterday, before Mr W. Meldrum. S.M. S. H. Morris, foi parking a car in Palmerston Street alongside the kerb for mftre than five minutes, was fined ss, and £1 costs. Louis Franklin Pain, for disobcnienci of a maintenance order, was convicted and sentenced to seven days in prison the warrant to be issued on or December 10th. A local resident, for breaking a prohibition order, was fluid 10s, and 10s costs.

The quarterly meeting of the Lie .•using Committee. which was to ha«>? been held yesterday, lapsed for the want of a quorum. Another attempt to hold the meeting will be made on December 20th.

Mr Hall, engineer of the Post and Telegraph Department, left for Greymouth yesterday.
